Research Assistant -France and China Relations (ref. 14114) Centre for East Asian Studies ESRC-Funded project: “Colonialism in comparative perspectives: Tianjin under nine flags, 1860-1949”. Applications are invited for a one-year Research Assistant post, beginning on 1 September 2008 or as soon as possible thereafter and based at the Centre for East Asian Studies but under the supervision of Prof Nicola Cooper at Swansea University. This ESRC-Funded project is being conducted by a group of scholars based at the University of Bristol. The focus of the project is on the Chinese port city of Tianjin which, between 1860 and 1945, was the site of up to nine foreign-controlled concessions. You will conduct fieldwork in Tianjin and in the French archives, with the aim of collecting data regarding the history of French involvement in China and, more specifically, the history of the French concession in Tianjin (1860-1946). You should have an excellent knowledge of Chinese, English and French, and demonstrable ability to conduct archival research in relevant archives. A PhD in Chinese studies, Historical Studies or a related discipline with a focus on French colonial history or Sino-French relations is essential. You will become part of a team of investigators led by Dr Maurizio Marinelli (Centre for East Asian Studies, University of Bristol), Prof Nicola Cooper (Modern Languages, University of Swansea) and Prof Robert Bickers (Department of Historical Studies, University of Bristol).
