Awww newlyweds. The first year of marriage. It either makes or breaks you as a couple. But add in an icky and not so family-friendly uncle camping out in the basement, and an unruly hippie sister sleeping on the couch--and the first year feels like centuries. Wendy French's AFTER THE RICE is a fun-filled adventure, that leaves you laughing and crying as you follow this early marriage into probably the hardest of their life.
Now most newlyweds are happy, go-lucky, and dare I say fancy free. Right? Well less than a year in the marriage and Megan Ismore finds herself late. And as the first line of the book says, "... and not for the bus." She's missed her period. And it's because she forgot to take her birth control pills. For any "normal" newlywed couple this might be a pleasant surprise. But for Matt and Megan. Not so much. They never wanted kids. There was and is school for Megan. And Matt's job. And life... now a life with a possible child.
It gets even more complicated for the couple too. The family involvement of the mother-in-law kind. Then the squatters in the house (uncles and sisters). Not to mention the terror of an infant child that Megan suddenly finds herself caring for. All the while she's not quite ready to share with Matt her pregnancy. What is a girl to do?
The book is a fun romp into the life of a woman that wasn't quite sure where she wanted to go. Or did know and then suddenly doesn't. Expect some chaos. Some family drama. Husband and wife things. And lots of fun. The book just twirls you around and makes you nod your head in recognition (how come the men in our lives can never remember where they left a thing in the house?). It's a quick read, and another one great for the bedside. Just don't forget to turn out the lights after a while!
